Chapter I: Silesian Tarmac Challenge Begins in Katowice and Jasienica
The 82nd Rally Poland officially ushered in a new era as Round 4 of the 2026 FIA European Rally Championship, moving away from its long-standing gravel legacy in Masuria to the fast, technical asphalt stages of Silesia. Base headquarters at the Stadion Śląski and the opening super special stage in downtown Katowice set a demanding tone for the international field. Drivers faced unpredictable grip levels and high speeds on the narrow mountain and foothill roads connecting Jasienica, Jastrzębie-Zdrój, and Ochaby.
Chapter II: Suninen Asserts Control After Early Disruptions
Finnish driver Teemu Suninen, piloting a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 alongside Antti Haapala, demonstrated exemplary pace control throughout Leg 1. After early stage stoppages caused by heavy accidents, Suninen took command of the overall leaderboard on SS4. Setting consistently strong times without exceeding track margins, Suninen built a narrow buffer over the chasing pack. His performance highlighted precise tire degradation management on the warm Silesian asphalt, allowing him to maintain the lead through the late afternoon loop.
Chapter III: Matulka and Marczyk Lead the Polish Counter-Attack
The home contingent mounted a fierce response throughout Saturday. Reigning Polish champions Jakub Matulka and Daniel Dymurski (Škoda Fabia RS Rally2) set the fastest overall time on SS2 and SS4, keeping Suninen within striking distance. Meanwhile, Mikołaj Marczyk and Szymon Gospodarczyk maintained pressure on the frontrunners, remaining well within the top three. Lancia Ypsilon Rally2 driver Andrea Mabellini also remained in close contention, ensuring that the fight for overall victory remained wide open heading into Sunday’s final stages.
Chapter IV: Overnight ERC Standings at the Conclusion of Leg 1
At the close of Saturday’s service park at Stadion Śląski, Suninen held a slender advantage over Matulka and Marczyk. The top crews were separated by less than ten seconds, setting up a high-stakes finale on Sunday’s iconic Przegibek, Kiczyce, and Hażlach special stages.
